St. John Bosco Dominates the 2023-2024 ADHSHL Season: A Remarkable 12-3-0 Record in 15 Games

St. John Bosco has had a very successful 2023-2024 ADHSHL season so far with a record of 12-3-0 after playing 15 games. The team currently stands in 3rd place with 37 points. 

GAME 1 | Saturday, September 23, 2023 | St. John Bosco 5, Villa Park 0 

St. John Bosco started the season with a shutout, winning with a final score of 5-0 against Villa Park on their first game of the season at Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena Rink #3. The season-opening goal scorer was Patrik Cech who recorded two goals within the first game (G1 at 02:00 of the first period was assisted by Matteo Vargas and Teegan Gardner, G2 at 12:00 of the second period was assisted by Krish Jindia and John Rebanal). The remaining goals from this game were scored by Gardner (2) and Luca Lira (1) with their first goals of the season occurring during the third period. Gardner’s first goal was scored at 11:49 and assisted by Cech and his second goal was scored at 05:00 was assisted by Noah Rebollo-Pena. Lira’s first goal was scored at 10:11 and assisted by Adam Benitez and Vargas. St. John Bosco’s Nicholai Rubio had a total of 51:00 TOI and faced 21 shots while Villa Park’s Brody Massi faced 35 shots. 

GAME 2 | Friday, September 29, 2023 | St. John Bosco 6, Yorba Linda Hockey Club 2

St. John Bosco carried that momentum into their second game of the season against Yorba Linda Hockey Club winning with a final score of 6-2. In this game against Yorba Linda Hockey Club, Cech recorded his first HT of the season as he scored the first goal as well as two other goals during the second and third periods. The remaining goals from this game were scored by Ian Sullano who scored his first goal of the season during the second period as well as another during the third period (2) and Gardner (1). During the first period, Cech scored the first goal of the game at 07:44 and was assisted by Sullano and Kaden Curry. In the second period of the game, Sullano scored at 07:22 and was assisted by goalie Michael Mamuzich followed by Cech scoring his second goal of the game at 06:44 which was unassisted. Cech opened up the third period with an unassisted SH goal at 16:12. St. John Bosco would then score again at 08:07 with Sullano getting credit for a PP goal and Cech getting the assist; followed by Gardner closing the game and scoring at 01:44 with assist by Benjamin Ruiz. Yorba Linda Hockey scored two goals during the first and third periods of the game. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 27 SOG while Yorba Linda Hockey had 13 SOG.

GAME 3 | Saturday, September 30, 2023 | Servite 3 4, St. John Bosco 3

The momentum from the past two games was carried during the first period of their third game against  Servite 3 as Cech opened up the first period with 2 goals, the first was recorded at 12:57 and assisted by Curry, and his second goal was recorded at 10:42 and assisted by Benitez while Lira closed up the first period with a PP goal recorded at 01:54 and was assisted by Cech and Sullano. The remainder of the game was left scoreless on behalf of St. John Bosco. Servite 3 caught up and tied the game within the third period. Unable to break the tie, this led to St. John Bosco’s first overtime of the season. After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to the shootout where St. John Bosco fell short and lost with a final score of 4-3. The 3 goals were recorded by Cech (2) and Lira who scored a PP goal (1). By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 40 SOG while Servite 3 had 36 SOG. This loss, although unfortunate, would be the driving force for their 7 game-win streak.

7 Game Win Streak  

GAME 4 | Saturday, October 7, 2023 | St. John Bosco 9, Saddleback United 3

St. John Bosco’s 7-game win streak started with a big win against Saddleback United with a final score of 9-3. The goals of this game were scored by: Cech who scored 6 goals and recorded two HTs in one game, Curry who scored his first goal of the season scored during the first period (1), Lira (1), and Sullano (1). Although Saddleback United scored first at 12:59, St. John Bosco answered back. During the first period, Cech scored at 09:37 and was assisted by Curry and Sullano as well as at 08:41 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena and Benitez; Curry then scored his first goal of the season at 05:35 which was assisted by Lira who would later score at 00:48 left in period one and was assisted by Cech and Jacob Gonzales. Sullano scored during the second period at 12:22 and was assisted by Gardner. Cech would open and close the 3rd period as he recorded goals at 16:34 (assisted by Lira), 14:29 (assisted by Sullano), 11:22 (assisted by Sullano and Curry), and 00:05 (unassisted). Saddleback United scored one goal during each period. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 35 SOG while Saddleback United had 11 SOG. 

GAME 5 | Saturday, October 14, 2023 | St. John Bosco 8, Central Cathedral 1

Followed by another big win against Central Cathedral 3 which ended with a final score of 8-1. The goals of this game were scored by: Chech (5, 4th HT of the season), Vargas who recorded his first goal of this season during the second period (1), Rebollo-Pena (1), and Jan Valasek (1) who both scored their first goal of the season scored during third period. St. John Bosco struck first in the first period as Cech recorded an unassisted goal at 16:01. In the second period, Cech scored an unassisted SH goal at 14:18 and 11:31; Vargas scored an unassisted goal at 04:44 followed by Cech closing the second period with another goal at 01:23 which was assisted by Valasek. Central Cathedral 3 scored a PP goal during the second period however, that would be the only goal they were able to score throughout the game. During the third period, Cech scored his 5th goal of the game at 16:09 and was assisted by Benitez, Rebollo-Pena scored at 11:30 which was assisted by Cech, and Valasekk scored at 07:20 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 26 SOG while Central Cathedral 3 had 13 SOG and ended with 4 players (two from Central Cathedral 3 and two from St. John Bosco) receiving a 5-minute major penalty for fighting. 

GAME 6 | Saturday, October 21, 2023 | St. John Bosco 4, Poway 2

St. John Bosco’s game against Poway ended with a final score of 4-2. Goals were scored by: Chech (1), Rebollo-Pena (1), Valasek (1), and Ruiz who scored his first goal of the season during the second period (1). During the first period, Cech scored the first goal of the game at 09:35 which was assisted by Robello-Pena who ended up scoring an unassisted goal at 03:59. In the second period, Valasek scored a SH goal at 08:42 which was assisted by Vargas and Ruiz scored a goal at 03:38 which was assisted by Cech. The third period remained scoreless however, St. John Bosco was able to maintain their lead. Poway scored 2 goals this game, once in the first period and another during the third period. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 29 SOG while Poway had 28 SOG. 

GAME 7 | Saturday, November 4, 2023 | St. John Bosco 8, Pacific Ridge 1

Against Pacific Ridge School 3, St. John Bosco won with a final score of 8-1. The goals of this game were scored by: Curry (2), Vargas (2), Ruiz (1), Benitez who recorded his first goal of the season scored during second period (1), and Cech (2). During the first period, St. John Bosco scored first as Curry recorded a PP goal at 08:46 which was assisted by Jindia, Vargas scored an unassisted goal at 05:26 and Ruiz scored at 01:09 which was assisted by Jindia. In the second period, Vargas scored another unassisted goal at 14:41, Benitez scored an unassisted goal at 10:41, and Cech scored a PP goal which was assisted by Curry and Rebollo-Pena. Pacific Ridge School 3 scored 1 PP goal during the second period. During the third period, Cech scored an unassisted SH goal at 08:03 and Curry scored an unassisted goal at 05:27. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 17 SOG while Pacific Ridge School 3 had 6 SOG.

GAME 8 | Saturday, November 18, 2023 | St. John Bosco 7, Bishop Amat 1

St. John Bosco followed that game up with another high-scoring game when they played against Bishop Amat which ended in a final score of 7-1. The goals of this game were scored by: Gardner (1), Rebollo-Pena (3), and Cech who scored 3 goals and recorded his 5th HT of the season. During the first period, St. John Bosco scored first as Gardner scored a goal at 04:24 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena who would score with 01:38 left in the period which was assisted by Jacob Gonzalez. In the second period, Rebollo-Pena scored an unassisted goal at 15:07 followed by Cech scoring at 11:13 and was assisted by Lira and Gonzalez. Bishop Amat scored one PP goal during the third period. Cech kept his scoring streak in the third period as he recorded 2 goals at 03:53 and 02:11 which were both assisted by Gardner and Rebollo-Pena scored the last goal of the game at 00:38 which was also assisted by Gardner. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 33 SOG while Bishop Amat had 16 SOG.

GAME 9 | Friday, December 1, 2023 | St. John Bosco 6, Fairmont 4 

St. John Bosco faced Fairmont 3 and won the game with a final score of 6-4. The goals of this game were scored by: Cech who scored three goals and recorded his 6th HT of the season, Gardner (1), and Vargas (2). During the first period, St. John Bosco got on the board first as Cech scored at 13:39 which was assisted by Gonzalez, and would score again at 03:00 which was assisted by Benitez and Vargas followed by Garnder scoring at 00:55 which was assisted by Cech and Rebollo-Pena. Fairmont 3 scored during the second period and St. John Bosco stayed quiet until Cech scored during the third period at 04:47 which was assisted by Gonzalez. Vargas then closed the third period off with an unassisted empty net goal at 00:14. Fairmont 3 scored three times during the first period and had 1 PP goal during the final 2 minutes of the third period. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 29 SOG while Fairmont 3 had 31 SOG.

GAME 10 | Saturday, December 2, 2023 | St. John Bosco 7, Santa Margarita 3 

The last game of St. John Bosco’s 7-game win streak was against Santa Margarita 3. St. John Bosco won with a final score of 7-3. The goals of this game were scored by: Rebollo-Pena (1), Cech who scored 4 goals and recorded his 7th HT of the season (4), Valasek (1), and Zavyer Ballon who scored his first goal of the season scored a SH goal during the second period (1). St. John Bosco got on the board first in the first period as Rebollo-Pena scored an unassisted goal at 09:59 and later assisted Cech’s goal which was scored at 05:24. Cech would then score again in the second period at 13:30 which was assisted by Garnder and Rebollo-Pena. Within the same period, Valasek scored at 10:12 which was assisted by Ruiz, Ballon scored an unassisted SH goal at 05:29, and Cech closed off the second period with a goal at 03:23 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena. In the third period, Cech recorded another goal at 12:44 which was assisted by Gardner and Vargas. Santa Margarita 3 scored once during the first period and then two more times during the third period. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 19 SOG while Santa Margarita 3 had 7 SOG.

GAME 11 | Friday, December 8, 2023 | Inland Empire United 7, St. John Bosco 5

Their 7-game win streak ended after a 7-5 loss against Inland Empire United 3 with goals scored by Cech (2) and Valasek who recorded his first HT of the season which included 2 PP goals. However, this loss ended up being the driving force for St. John Bosco in their following game. During the first period of game 11, Inland Empire United 3 scored two goals and St. John Bosco’s first goal of the period would not occur until 10:09 as Cech scored a PP goal, assisted by Valasek. The second period remained heavily dominated by Inland Empire United 3 as they scored 3 goals while St. John Bosco’s only goal of the period was recorded by Cech which was an unassisted PP goal. The third period is when St. John Bosco came back to life as Valasek scored three unassisted goals which consisted of two PP goals at 11:16 and 03:34 as well as another goal at 00:01. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 31 SOG while Inland Empire United 3 had 36 SOG. 

GAME 12 | Saturday, December 9, 2023 | St. John Bosco 9, Damien 2

St. John Bosco faced Damien 3 and with the momentum from the previous loss, resulted in another high-scoring win with a final score of 9-2. The players who scored in this game included: Ty Izadi who scored his first goal of the season during the first period as well as his first HT of the season (3), Cech who recorded his 8th HT of the season, Valasek (1), Rebollo-Pena (1), and Lira (1). St. John Bosco took control of the first period as Izadi scored a PP goal at 14:13 which was assisted by Cech who would shortly score an unassisted PP goal at 12:09 followed by Valasek scoring a SH goal at 5:17 which was assisted by Idazi. St. John Bosco continued to carry their momentum into the second period as Izadi scored a goal at 16:81 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena; Czech scored at 14:19 which as assisted by Valasek, Rebollo-Pena scored at 13:49 which was assisted by Valasekt and Izadi, Lira scored an unassisted SH goal at 09:36, Izadi scored at 04:13 which was assisted by Benitez, and Cech scored the last goal of the period and game overall at 02:52 which was assisted by Valasek. Damien 3 scored two goals during this game, one in the first period and then another in the second period. They also had more penalties compared to St. John Bosco. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 42 SOG while Damien 3 had 18 SOG. 

GAME 13 | Friday, January 5, 2024 | St. John Bosco 8, Villa Park 2

The team would then go on to win their next game against Villa Park with a final score of 8-2. The 8 goals scored were done with 11 total shots by the following players: Lira (1), Cech (4, 9th HT of the season), Rebanal who scored his first goal of the season during the second period (1), Ruiz (1), and Gardner (1). St. John Bosco took control of the first period as Lira scored the first unassisted goal at 12:50 and Cech scored another unassisted goal at 01:49. They continued to maintain control of the game during the second period as Rebanal scored at 14:53 which was assisted by Lira; Cech scored at 9:14 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena and Gardner; Ruiz scored at 09:00 which was assisted by Lira and Rebanal, and Cech scored an unassisted PP goal. Villa Park scored once during the first and second periods but remained scoreless in the third period. Cech scored during the third period at 15:19 which was assisted by Lira and Gardner scored at 10:30 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 11 SOG while Villa Park had 20 SOG.

GAME 14 | Saturday, January 6, 2024 | Stockton 4, St. John Bosco 1

Their win streak was cut short when St. John Bosco faced Stockton and lost 4-1 on January 6, 2024, with Rebollo-Pena scoring a goal in the third period. Stockton dominated the first period and scored 3 unanswered goals. The second period had many penalties spread across both teams (3 for St. John Bosco and 2 for Stockton). The third period consisted of two PP goals; 1 for Stockton at 11:23 and 1 for St. John Bosco which was scored at 01:14 by Rebollo-Pena and assisted by Lira. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 16 SOG while Stockon had 47 SOG. 

GAME 15 | Saturday, January 20, 2024 | St. John Bosco 9, Panthers Warriors United 1 

St. John Bosco came back triumphantly on January 20, 2024, when they faced the Panthers Warriors United and ended the game with a big win and a score of 9-1. The goals of this game were scored by: Marcus Martinez who scored his first two goals of the season during the first period of the game and another during the (2), Izadi (2), Rebollo-Pena (1), Cech (2), Gardner (1), Curry (1). St. John Bosco took control of the first period as Martinez scored two goals at 09:35 which was assisted by Benitez and another at 07:02 which was assisted by Mattan Benisty. Izadi closed the first period with a goal at 06:48 which was assisted by Curry. During the second period, Rebollo-Pena scored a SH goal at 10:09 which was assisted by Gardner; Panthers Warriors United scored their first goal of the second period at 01:35 which was then followed by Izadi scoring again at 00:36 and was assisted by Cech and Rebanal. St. John Bosco completely dominated the third period as Cech scored at 10:05 which was assisted by Benisty and Sullano and then scored a SH goal at 03:00 which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena. Garder also scored a SH goal which was assisted by Rebollo-Pena and Curry recorded the last goal of the game at 00:12 and was assisted by Sullano. Despite ending the game with 5 penalties compared to the 2 Panthers Warriors United penalties, St. John Bosco’s PK was strong enough to not only maintain their lead but keep control of the game overall. By the end of the game, St. John Bosco had 33 SOG while Panthers Warriors United had 11 SOG.
